5-Finger Flush Of Project Leadership And Delivery

Alan D Orr in his book, Advanced Project Management, emphasises four key elements required for successful project delivery:

  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Business Case, and
  • Identifying activities with long lead times.

I add a fifth element to Orr’s list:

  • Any lessons learned from previous projects?

I call these five elements the Five Finger Flush for two reasons.

First, you can count them on the fingers of one hand. Second, when you have them in place, you increase your likelihood of gaining a winning hand, if you’ll pardon the poker reference. It may not quite be an ‘unbeatable hand’, like a Royal Flush, so I have left out the word Royal. However, like a ‘Flush’ in poker, when you have five cards of the same suit, it is a pretty good hand to have in order to win.

What do you consider your top 5 elements required for successful project delivery?
