Anger Management: Hip-Hop To Classical

What music would you listen to in stressful work situations?

Music has always been a part of my life, for as long as I can remember. As I got into the workforce, I discovered that soft, classical music tends to help when I need to think. However, for those moments when I am under pressure, but did not want to show too much of the strain around team members, I chose to listen to hip-hop music, to soothe me. That was my attempt to channel my stress through the often-charged lyrics.

More recently I discovered that classical music could be just as powerful as hip-hop, to see me through those high-pressure moments. Vladimir Horowitz’s rendition of Liszt’s ‘Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, prelude for piano (after J. S. Bach), S. 179 (LW A198)’ comes to mind. The song is featured on the album, Horowitz – The Last Recording. Ironically, this was the first CD I ever purchased, way back in 1992. I have listened to the album on dozens of occasions, but only recently began to appreciate its hip-hop-like soothing qualities.
