Good Leadership Demands Duty Of Care And Diligence

The incident on 20 October, 2020 around Lekki in Lagos (Nigeria) where unarmed citizens were gunned down allegedly by military officers dressed in uniform is not only appalling and immoral but also reprehensible.

Some time back, the Nigerian government created the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) to tackle increasing crime and kidnappings. History of the squad is available here

However, there have been concerns in the general public that, allegedly, SARS officers have been unfairly targeting and victimising younger members of the population by profiling youths who appear well-dressed and then inflicting unspeakable actions on such citizens. These concerns led to the ongoing demonstrations across the country to #EndSARS.

I respect the youth and fellow peaceful demonstrators towards their cause, and calls for justice and equity.

Good leadership and governance demand transparency, duty of care, diligence and acting in good faith. These fundamental qualities seem to have been lacking for decades in our beloved country, Nigeria. It may have been a long time coming, but I believe change is going to come soon. The era of callous oppression is over. A leadership that turns on its own people has no followers.

Please share your ideas how each one of us can support this noble cause, and help bring about this long overdue change in our beloved Nigeria. I value your ideas and thoughts.

Thank you and please stay safe and well,

Dayo Sowunmi II
