Lessons For Living

From my free video on 16 Books Every Leader Must Read…

Book #6: 30 Lessons for Living by Karl Pillemer.

In his book titled 30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans, Karl Pillemer interviews a thousand people over the age of 65. His goal with the book was to learn from their experience on a number of topics, including their careers.

Pillemer is Professor of Human Development at Cornell University and Professor of Gerontology in Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College.

One of the key takeaways from the book is that “everyone needs autonomy – career satisfaction is often dependent on how much autonomy you have on the job. Look for the freedom to make decisions and move in directions that interest you, without too much control from the top.”

As a Leader it is easy to tend towards micro-managing your team members, however, research shows this is usually counter-productive particularly in instances where some creativity is required from the team members (for example, graphics design, software design and development, music production and so on).
